Catalog, INTRODUCTION This year marks the 100th anniversary of the establishment by The Kennel Club (Britain) of a separate class for Irish Wolfhounds. They were shown for the first time under this classification in the same year (1879) at a show held from April 1 -4 in Dublin under the auspices of the Irish Kennel Club. Judge Hugh Dalziel placed P. H. Cooper's Brian first, F. Adcock's hound - name unknown - second, and Captain Graham's Scot third. Dogs were registered for the first time in April 1880. It is not known when the first Irish Wolfhound was brought to the United States, but the first were registered about 1912 by Joseph A. McAleenan (The Newry Hounds) and followed closely by the Toyon Kennels. By 1926 a few hounds were being exhibited. The Sesqui-Centennial in Philadelphia was the scene of a model dog show held by the AKC and Mrs. Norwood B. Smith (Cragwood) contacted many IW owners and urged them to come and show their Hounds. Fourteen Hounds were entered and this inspired Mrs. Smith to hold a meeting in which the Irish Wolfhound Club of America was formed and a decision was made to apply for AKC membership. In 1927 the second Club meeting took place at the Westminster Show. By this time the Club had been granted a charter by the AKC. Election of officers took place and the club modeled itself after the Irish Wolfhound Club in England. It was decided to support two shows per year - the Westminster Show and another out-of-door show to be considered the club specialty. In 1928 the first IWCA Specialty Show was held in conjunction with the Storm King Show at Cornwall, New York as well as in September of 1929. The site was Devon, Pennsylvania in 1930. From 1930-1941 the classes of the Morris and Essex show were considered the club specialty. In 1942, Katonah, New York was the show site. For the next three years the members were involved in war activities, so it was not until 1946 that the Irish Wolfhound Specialty was again held in Katonah. Since then the club show has been held seperately in various places at the invitation of club members. Following are pictures and pedigrees of the winners of the Irish Wolfhound Club of America Specialty Shows. The Board of Directors and the 1979 Show Committee hope the newer exhibitors will derive as much pleasure in seeing these pictures and pedigrees as the senior members have and continue to do.
